Banner Majors

Element451 Data Source Sync#

Explanation#

Majors are synced from Banner using the following Ethos endpoint: /api/academic-programs

Sync Behavior#

Element451 imports majors based on the following criteria:

  • The program is active, or
  • The program has an end date that is:
    • A default “end of time” value, or
    • Within the past 10 years

During sync, Element451 creates multiple versions of each program based on how Ethos structures academic data.

These include:

  • Program only
  • Program + major (field of study)
  • Program + major + concentration (if applicable)

Ethos does not indicate which combinations are valid based on Banner configuration (SOACURR). As a result, all combinations are initially synced, and partners must determine which are valid.

Program/Major Details#

In Element451, program combinations are represented using a pipe ( | ) separator in the Code field.

Example program structures:

  • CEAC-CERTG
    • Program only
  • CEAC-CERTG | CEAC
    • Program + major (field of study)
  • CEAC-CERTG | CEAC | XCON
    • Program + major + concentration

The Name field can be customized, but the Code field reflects the structure used for integration and should not be modified.

Integration Codes

Each major includes associated Ethos identifiers, which can be viewed by:

  • Clicking the pencil icon.
  • Clicking to the Integration Code tab

These values map to Ethos GUIDs used during integration.

Example mapping:

  • SIS → Program GUID
  • Custom 1 → Major (field of study) GUID
  • Custom 2 → Degree GUID
  • Custom 4 → Concentration GUID

Validating Active Options#

All majors are imported as active by default.

Because Ethos does not validate combinations against SOACURR:

  • Some program combinations may be invalid
  • Invalid combinations can result in sync errors, such as:
    • “Curriculum invalid”
    • “The curriculum for priority 1 and sequence 1 is invalid”

To prevent these errors:

  • Review all synced program combinations
  • Deactivate invalid options

Recommended Approach

  • Deactivate program entries that do not include a pipe (|) when other versions exist
  • For programs with multiple pipe-separated options:
    • Validate each combination against SOACURR
    • Deactivate any invalid combinations

Only valid program + major + concentration combinations should remain active for use in applications.
